This Means War

No.

I absolutely adored this movie and already consider it a personal favorite, however when asked if I’d recommend it to the population at large I’d lean towards no because the level of violence may turn away female viewers looking for a standard rom-com and the romance may turn away male viewers looking for a standard action flick.

The Artist

Yes.

You may have heard of this Oscar favorite because it’s black and white and silent, but let me add it’s also an absolutely beautiful, heartfelt piece of filmmaking.

Friends With Benefits

Yes.

While the script tries to do too much and falls into some of the same tropes as the rom-coms it decries, the chemistry of the stars is undeniable and the level of humor is a cut above most in the genre.

The Adjustment Bureau

No.

All the wonderful actors in this Philip K. Dick short story writ large turn in enjoyable performances, but they are showcased in what isn’t a bad movie by any means, just a seemingly insignificant one.

Blue Valentine

Yes.

The performances in Blue Valentine are so real that after a few minutes it ceases to feel like simply a ‘movie,’ but a visceral, authentic depiction of love in the real world.

The Dilemma

Yes.

While the second half veers wildly closer to drama than comedy, there is still a lot of fun to be had here due to Vince Vaughn’s manic performance and a winning premise.

The Tourist

No.

The most engaging aspect of this film was the beautiful locale; otherwise it was one of the least interesting espionage stories I’ve ever seen and, frankly, I’m astounded it was even made.

Morning Glory

Yes.

This cute comedy about Rachel McAdams struggling to produce a low rated morning show includes a terrific performance from Harrison Ford, who is absolutely perfect as a disgruntled newsman who can’t stand his new anchor role.

Knight And Day

Yes.

With James Mangold at the helm and charismatic stars Tom Cruise and Camera Diaz leading the way, this action/comedy/romance hybrid manages to hit all the right notes and prevail as one of the most entertaining films I’ve seen in quite a while.

(500) Days Of Summer

Yes.

This uniquely constructed romantic comedy is a cut above the rest, mixing some great moments of poignancy and truly gripping cinema with the typical wisecracks and sidekicks you’ve come to expect from the genre.
